Beer is fattening and full of empty calories. Even "light" beer is not "good" for you.
You only will get a beer gut if you drink tons of beer, dont exercise or eat right. If you drink tons of beer, but exercise and do eat well you wont. I know a guy that drinks a 12 pack a day, but he works out and eats fairly healthy and he dont have a beer gut.

There are lots of other factors involved with obtaining a "beer belly", but one of the major ones is the fact that beer is carbonated, as opposed to most other alcoholic beverages. Yes, champagne and other sparkling wines are carbonated, too, but beer is far-and-away the more frequently consumed.
As beer is consumed, the bubbles (in addition to the volume of liquid) expand the stomach. At the same time, the alcohol in the beer has a sedative effect on the drinker. Over time, the abdominal walls stretch, resulting in the "spare tire" associated with frequent beer consumption.
This obviously only applies to folks who drink beer very frequently; someone who enjoys a couple of beers on Saturday night isn't likely to develop a beer belly, because the abdominal muscles have plenty of time to spring back into shape.

People drink a lot of beer at a time. While other drinks are mostly alcohol, which the body cannot absorb, beer is mostly starch, which makes you fat....
People say that rice and beer give big waists. There are loads of counter examples though....

Beer has one of the lowest alcohol by volume ratios among alcoholic drinks, which means it takes a lot more beer to get you drunk, than say, tequila shots. Because of this, people drink alot more beer than they would most other drinks, to achieve the same results. This increased consumption leads to more calories, which leads to being fat.
