I've been having an emotional affair with a man since January. We e-mail each other several times a week. When I read his letters, it's like getting a "fix", something like a drug addict would feel after taking whatever drugs he's addicted to. If I don't get his letters for a few days, the high starts to fade and I start to feel "withdrawal" symptoms. I get very irritable and short tempered. When another letter arrives, I'm on a high again. Am I imagining these feelings, or can there really be something chemical going on?

Maybe you have an "addictive" personality...
It doesnt seem out of control right now, but be careful because it might move on to something else like drugs, alcohol, sex, you might even become addicted to another person...

which is very unhealthy...
If you start to feel out of control, you should seek therapy.

that's the anxiety you get when you steal something or do something you know that you are not supposed to do! You know how that goes? So everytime you get a message you get that high cause you know that he snuck away to give you a second of his time without anyone knowing and when you don't get a message you feel like you were caught, you know noone acts happy when they have been caught stealing from a store or whatever so I wouldn't even let him fool around with my mental like that unless he was sending me hundreds of dollars in the mail or something that's what I would get excited about!!!

Feelings are never imaginary. How could they be? You feel them regardless of the reasons. Also, feelings can change your chemical balance and vice versa. It does sound like you're addicted to your communication with this man. Have you considered meeting him instead of conducting a fantasy relationship?

There MIGHT be. But I'm more inclined to think that you need some counseling yourself, if you really need these letters so much.

It's great that you can enjoy them. But dependency is another matter.

Good luck.

Don't think it is anything "chemical"....just excitement over a
relationship, which is natural....but be VERY CAREFUL
about any INTERNET relationship......surely I don't have to
tell you about the weirdos out there looking for a prey!
