The cut-down model has a 40G-byte hard-disk drive, as opposed to the 60G-byte drive on the current high-end model, and doesn't have the ability to run PlayStation 2 software. The number of USB connectors has also been halved, to two.

The 40G does not have backwards compatibility but if you already own a ps2, just keep it and play ps2 games on that. The 60G also has 4 usb ports as opposed to 2 on the 40G. If you need more space because you're going to save a lot of stuff and want to play ps2 games on it then get the 60G. If not then its not worth to spend $100 more for it. I personally am going to get a 40G.

The 40 gb does NOT have PS2 backward compatibility, but it does have PSX (Playstation 1) backward compatibility.

The 40 gb only has 2 USB ports and no flash drives, while the 60 gb has 4 USB ports and flash drives.

They both have Wi-Fi out of the box.

Get the 60 gb if you mjust have backward compatibility. The 60 gb has the emotion chip, which was used in the PS2, so the 60 gb will be able to play almost all PS2 games.

If you keep your PS2, you won't have to worry about backward compatibility.

If you have PS1 or PS2 games that you want to play buy the 60GB PS3. The 40GB PS3 has no backward compatibility and cannot play PS1 or PS2 games. That's the only major difference besides the extra 20GB.

60GB is better, because:
1). It supports PS2 games (US version is the best - it has Emotion Engine chip to deal with that issue, euro version is good too, but it run old games on software emulation). 40GB version doesn't support PS2 games at all. Only PS1 games can be played.
2). It has 4 USBs (40GB has only 2).
3). It has memory slots (40GB doesn't have that)
Both versions have wi-fi.

P.S. If you want 60GB - get it now, Sony won't make them in the future.
