the 60gb has 20gb more (obviously) and it can play ps2 games as the 40gb can't. The 40gb can still play ps1 games though.

Backwards compitibility with ps2 games is gone.. get a 60 or 80 if this affects u.. atleast u wont get the red lights of death with a ps3

The cut-down model has a 40G-byte hard-disk drive, as opposed to the 60G-byte drive on the current high-end model, and doesn't have the ability to run PlayStation 2 software. The number of USB connectors has also been halved, to two.
Can also heat 2 rooms with the 60G as opposed to just 1 with the 40G :p
