China is in the middle of a transition between communism and capitalism, and that transition will have some impacts on the environment. Some areas are extremely polluted (Linfen is the second worst polluted site in the world, just after Sumgayit in Azerbaijan), while others are still pristine. Chinese are very well aware of the challenges they face and are starting to address them, but it takes time.
But China is not alone, of course. Do you know that the USA are the highest polluter by capita in the world? Do you know that the USA still top the chart of green gas emitters per capita? Do you know that the Mississippi River in TN, AR, LA, MO, IL, MN, WI, IA, KY, MS is the most polluted in the USA, mainly due to untreated sewage? That entire tracts of land in some US states are off limits because they are unfit for human use due to irreversible environmental degradation. By the way, I visited places in my profession (I am an environmental scientist) in WV, VT, PA that were a lot worst than what I saw generally in China...
Pollution is not just garbage on the side of the street. It is much deeper than that and it involves not just governments but also industry and consummers. It is our responsibility to act, not to point the finger at others and pretend that we are holier than everybody else in the world.

If you don't know anything, why are being so negative? The US emissions out strip any 2 countries in the world, including China. If you want to believe China is evil and bad, why come here to say so? Did a Chinese girl turn you down or something?

China is at the same level as Mexico, a little dirtier than Spain, and better than India. It's way worse than Japan, and way better than most underdeveloped countries.
Over the world, I would say China's dirty level is around the average. Is averagely dirty "very dirty"? The answer is up to you.

i went china in July with 20 school Friends and i thought the country was more cleaner than London maybe it's because we stayed in Beijing but i quite enjoyed the country but i wouldn't recommend it for someone with heavy asthma because china is polluted as soon as i got out of the air port i thought it was fog but it was 5pm. and your right the driving is horrible and they don't even follow the traffic lights, there's no seat belts in the coaches and the country has weird smells but it's a great place to go.

When you say dirty, do you mean garbage on the ground? I would say it is actually quite clean and just like other countries!

No that's ridiculous, China has yet to achieve the status of slum.
Frankly, anything bad you here about China is probably an understatement.

China is very dirty in terms of pollution, and the streets are quite filthy. I've been there and wasn't impressed at all. That's what happens when you have a communist government.
