I must say I agree with you.Its very rare on the tube that ANY man will give up a seat, even for heavily pregnant women, but when they do it is usually white men.

white men?? really?? i've seen all types of men give up a seat for a woman. but recently, i actually stood up on a train to give a woman my seat because she was carrying a baby and walking with 2 small children...and she walked from the front to the back of the entire train car and not a single person stood up. i was sitting at the window seat, asked the GUY next to me to let me out, and I offered her my seat. I couldn't believe that no one else did this. and then i had a young black man offer me his seat after i stood up, i said "no thank you". then one of the conductors, who is a young black man walked in and just shook his head and said "it's great to see how many gentlemen we have on this train". . . sooo this was my observation...and i noticed the white men acting more ignorant than anyone else.
star for you though, i like this question

Yes, I agree. It's a generally lack of respect and manners if others don't. It should be a common courtesy thing not a racial thing. Being black, white, Asian, Indian, Martian has nothing to do it basic manners and common courtesies. So for all of you that play the race card, give it up! It also makes no sense in this case.

I think it has to do with their surroundings and the way they were brought up. I'm not saying anything bad about the African American men, but I'm just saying that since you seem to notice that it is only the white man that gives up his seat. If he's always around people getting up for women or the elder then that is what he is goin to learn to do and do when he is older.

I've noticed that in the states but here in canada, it's different. I've had lots of guys that are (quote "red and yellow black and blue if your purple it's okay too!" ) of all different nationalities offer me and my friends seats. I think it's because blacks or whatever color you don't think is as polite as white, are still afraid of being judged in USA. In Canada we've always made them feel welcome, and they feel right at home with our indians ect... but in the states they arent sure who can still be trusted.
I have a "colored" friend who asked me the other day after having a bad dream, if people came and made them slaves again what would us whites do about it. I told her that if they still can't get over skin colors than I'd fight to the death for her. Maybe all "non-whites" still have nightmares about being taken again and are careful around "whites" they dont know they can trust.
I see everybody as a beauiful rainbow that God created to flow through the earth each color making it more beautiful because they are together. :D

Different cultures and races have their own idea of propriety. Some mothers don't teach their kids any manners at all, much less giving up a seat.

entitlement- some people think they are entitled.
I was at a meeting last night that was a full house, I was the only female standing. Not one man, black or white offered me their seat. Where are the manners these days???????
Why does everyone think only of themselves????

To be honest, I've never had a man give up his seat for me (except for male friends and family members). I would assume that the men who give up their seats are the ones who notice the situation. Perhaps minority men are trying harder to mind their own business and don't notice? Or perhaps white men are more comfortable speaking up?
