Manners and morals are subjective and are strongly based in the culture, so they need to be evaluated not by our standards but by those of the culture that made them.
I would say that it is only relatively recently that gods have been getting less human qualities.

I do agree men dream up gods and morals so as to avoid the issue of facing G-d.
gods are define as anything that distracts you from G-d.
For example atheism is a god because it does distract people from G-d.

I've met some Pagans with some pretty lofty ideas about deity. They are also some of the few that will also acknowledge that they're only scratching the surface of the concept of deity.
