I've had this male cat for years that's at least 8 years old. He was neutered and never mated.

Lately he's been climbing on top of me as I go to sleep at night and twitching about, shaking his hips.... If I disturb him he acts quite offended and runs away... as if these were the signs of a female cat in heat.

I'm really confused; has anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like he's just trying to get comfortable or get some attention from you, like a head rub, when he jumps up on you. Usually cats' ways of getting attention are pretty standard throughout their lives though, so it's weird that he just suddenly started doing this. If you're really concerned, ask a vet to check him out. Otherwise, just show him some love when he jumps up on you and hopefully it won't scare or offend him into running off.

When you say shaking his hips, could he be sort of knelt down and kneading his paws? Because my male cat kneads with all four paws at once, and when he does something like what you described he seems to be waiting to see if I'll be laying still long enough for him to get comfortable and lie down. If I leave him alone and am still enough (almost never happens) he lays down like he plans to sleep right on top of me lol.

If this change in behavior is sudden, you might indeed want to let a vet to look at him.

It could be that he's simply trying to get comfortable himself.
