Unfortunately, plastic can only be recycled once. There is a misconception that you can recycle it over and over, but you can only do that with glass or aluminum. When plastic goes to the recycling plant, it gets recycled into a non-recyclable material that eventually ends up in a landfill. That's why it's so important to reduce and reuse. You can wash off and use your platic ware a few times over, but don't wash it in the dishwasher or heat it in the microwave, because it will leak toxins under extreme heat.

Instead of tossing it in the trash, I use and re-use plastic utensils over and over again. They're dishwasher-safe, and it certainly helps save the environment. Tossing them in the trash only adds to our already-overcrowded landfills. Funny how it's the very people who refuse to REuse, REduce and REcycle who don't want a landfill in their backyard, isn't it?? -RKO- 10/24/07

Plastics can be recycled over and over again because each time you mix some virgin material into it.
Cross linking plastic cannot be recycled.

The whole point of plasticware is that you toss it in the trash when you are done. If you want to use it over and over again I would recommend stainless steel.

Plastic does break down over time. It really depends on how you are cleaning it that will determine its longevity, along with other factors like UV exposure etc.
