i got a 360 in the summer 2006 and returned it within 2 months. am i right in thinking the ps3's potential will last much longer than the 360 and wii. some people have not lifted their wii controllers for months. one huge difference is the cost, if you add all the items in the ps3 it costs much less than the 360. the 360 does not have the wi-fi adaptor, hd hard drive etc theyre all seperate wheras the ps3 already has it. another thing is that the ps3 discs can hold up to 50gb worth of data which means more quality graphics and content for ps3 games, the 50gb storage on blue-ray discs is going up to 200gb. however the 360 discs can only hold upto 9gb on their dvd discs, microsoft are now deciding whether to incorporate the hd dvd drive in their 360 which will allow the discs to hold 30gb but doing that wont they make their current gamers angry as developers will have to make two versions of 360 games, one for normal dvd and one for hd dvd. game developers are moaning that new 360 games have to be stored on 2 -3 discs because 1 disc is not enough. Now mate are you willing to change disc every single time a new chapter in the game comes, with the ps3 you dont. By the way im getting the 40gb ps3 this november :-)

playstation online free gaming whereas xbox live £40

please dont mention the wiii as its not in the same league maybe fun for a little while but i got bored

keep in mind the longer term potential of both consoles as i believe the ps3 will last longer due to its higher storage rate on blue-ray discs a staggering 50gb compared to the 9gb on 360 dvd discs, also some games are downscaled in terms of graphics to actually fit into one disc, do you folks think that it is only a matter of the new year before playstation 3 start catching up with 360. another when compared with each other sales both consoles have sold the same amount in their first year......arghhhhh so much to take in

Someone asked this yesterday and this was what I put...

"Depends on your needs...

If you want to watch blu-ray movies then get the PS3. If however you enjoy games and want a wider selection (in the shorter term) get the Xbox360. There are more games and they are cheaper (here in the UK anyway).

Here's the closest I can come to "proof". I have a 360 but it broke down and is currently being repaired... In the meantime I bought a PS3 and although the couple of games that I have on it (Resistance and Motorstorm) are very enjoyable, there is very little else that I want to get at the moment on the PS3. So although I have the PS3, I miss the Xbox.

In fairness, though, I am not a hardcore gamer and maybe someone who is will give you a better idea (someone who is not a "fanboy" for either console)."

I still stand by it. There is so much more content on the 360 right now. It depends how many games you're planning on buying, but I would get the 360 right now (cheaper/more content) and then maybe review it in 6 - 12 months.

Just an opinion. NOT a fanboy!!

Edit - Based on your additional deatils:

Sony claim there will be 65 games out by Christmas, so that's quite a jump compared to now. But I think it will take them at least 12 months to catch up with the volume of games on 360.

I agree with you but what you're saying isn't really a question.

Most people defend what they have bought because they don't want to think what they went out and spent a few hundred dollars on is inferior to something else. They say ignorant things like it costs too much or there are no games which doesn't make sense because 360 was expensive when it came out and the game selection was laughable until early '07.
Time will tell. Ps3 will wind up selling more and put 360 in its dust just like PS2 did to dreamcast and Xbox.
Another thing Americans fail to realize is that 360 is only popular in America. Asian countries play either Nintendo or Playstation. Ps3 will make big strides this winter and next year and all those people who were making fun of it will wind up buying one.

WOW, i've been trying to figure out which one I like better now for months! The 360 has GEARS OF WAR , which I absolutely love but Playstation has some great games too.

I find the graphics to be comparable in quality. I do like the controlllers better for the playstation as they are more comfortable to hold, but it is a tough decision.

The 360 live is a lot of fun, and i think it is more popular than the playstation online, regardless of the extra cos

The playstation has a sleeker look to it, and it has an incredible amount of accessories (at an extra cost)

I think it's really a toss up. The game manufacturers did a good job this time around of making it hard for us but what made it for me was the BLU-Ray disc feature of the PS3.. so in the end, that's what I bought. I enjoy playing the 360 though

Keep in mind people that technically Microsoft is one console behind Sony. PS1 PS2 and PS3 against Xbox and Xbox360 OK Microsoft have released 3 different versions of the 360 but they are all the same bar the storage. I owned a PS2 but converted to a 360 and have absolutely no wish to own a PS3 at this time simply due to price in the future who knows though :) ill agree the free online subscription for the PS is brilliant but compareing prices with xbox you have already paid 3 years suscription

This is my cut and paste answer. The reason for that is because a tech info is a tech info, you can't beat it.

PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.

Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:

A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%.

PS3 has 8 (7+1) kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 180$, in this case Xbox is going to be MUCH more expensive, than PS3.
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in 4 slots card reader (except 20GB and 40GB versions), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $

Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. To estimate its power (roughly) - take 6800 Ultra nvidia graphics card, multiply it by 2 - get a result, still PS3 stronger, because 6800 Ultra runs on 400 Mhz and RSX runs on 550 Mhz. However, it's difficult to compare, because 360 has a video chip with totally different structure and operating memory is divided differently in both consoles.

PS3 uses technology from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This thing is on sale for PC(special card). The price is around 350$. There is no such thing in 360.

Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 12 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it. That's why in some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".

Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.

In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......

PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.

There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.

The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console. Biggest games weigh only 25 GB (Xbox 360 will need more than 3 discs even for those).

On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.

PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.

Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. Soon there is going to be cheaper 40GB version of PS3.

Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.

PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 controller is getting vibrocontroller soon (Dualshock 3).

On PS3 you can help sick people by running Folding Home project. Wii and Xbox 360 didn't even think about it.

New 40GB is coming with a lower prive between around 400$ and 400 euros (depends on the region).

I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.
