common sense went out with parenting..... common sense is a learned thing.... if you don't get to experience some of life's pitfalls, you don't learn how to avoid them, USING common sense ..... for example.... getting your good clothes dirty when you're a kid.... you KNOW Mom said stay clean, you're going somewhere.... you then go outside to wait for them to get in the car... there's the dog... the dog is muddy....do you....
call the dog and pet him?
ignore the dog and stay clean?
call the dog with the car door open?
go back into the house?....

common sense TAUGHT you LAST time that Mom would hammer you if you got dirty before you left to go somewhere and she had to be late in order to clean you up.....
common sense taught you LAST time that if you let the dog intothe car all muddy, you'd spend the next three days cleaning it up....
common sense would have you ignore the dog,but on the offhand chance that the dog would come over anyways, you use your brain and go back and wait in the house for self protection... and good use of the common sense you learned from your Mom..... and her swats on your behind or other apropos punishments....

kids today don't get that... therefore, they have nothing in the common sense department to draw from.....

i think that common sense it an assumption. we assume that all people know of certain things, but in reality not everyone does. coz people grow up with different beliefs, in different enviroments, some people watch alot of TV, some don't watch at all, people have different religions, cultures, languages. what might be common sense in an english speaking language, may not have any concept in another lanquage.
it's like when i was studying art, the teacher was explaining colours, and what colour go together.. etc. then he asked me, " for example, what are the Easter colours?" i didn't know coz i'm not from a christian background, but he assumed that i would. ( to him it was common sense)!

Hehe. I ask, often and loudly, why common sense (and common courtesy) aren't common any more.

The only thing I can come up with (based on personal observation and nothing more) is that society, in general, is suffering a severe case of "lack of ownership."

If something bad happens, it's someone else's fault.
If things aren't going right, it's someone else's fault.
If someone looks at you funny, it's all on them - nothing to do with you.

When absolutely nothing that happens to a person has anything to do with them (yeah... right...), they don't worry about what they're doing to others.

Because 'common sense' will vary with each individual currently.

This is why I am uncomfortable every time someone talks about doing something for the common good.

Dunno, but it wasn't common sense to eat the fruit of the tree in the garden of Eden: we got off to a bad start!!

Because its relativistic. If common sense was common we'd probably be living in a totalitarian dictatorship with successful machinery of propoganda!
