exercising to burn "X" amount of calories is a complete waste of time and won't get you anywhere. all machines use statistical data based on BMI type data to give the amount of calories burned and those numbers are highly inaccurate.

to increase your cardiovascular endurance and your VO2Max you need to focus on constantly increasing the intensity of exercise. the easiest way to do this for cardio is to constantly increase the distance traveled at the same level in the same amount of time. so today if you exercise for 30 minutes at level 4.1 and travel "x" miles the next cardio day the goals should be "x.2" miles, etc. this is how you keep pushing yourself and force the body to adapt and become more efficient. at the conclusion of exercise you should be out of breath to the point where it's impossible to hold a normal conversation.

You can try jogging at like 5.5 or so at a 3% or more incline depending how you feel for like 30 secs. Do that every 3 or 4 mins. Do what your comfortable with, but try to push yourself a little bit more every week.

If you're just walking, figure 100 calories per mile. Running increases that a little bit.

For calorie burning purposes, walking is as good as running, it just takes a lot longer.

If you're starting out, 5.5 or so if you're just starting. And no, people don't watch you when you run, nobody cares. People are just generally self-absorbed, which at the gym is not necessarily a bad thing
