It hasn't been dropped and it's only about 3 years old, but it has weird purple and green colors going through it. Does that mean it is time for a new TV? Or can I take it to be repaired. I payed $500 for it new.

The purple is in the middle and the green is on the borders- it covers the whole screen.

First of all, make sure you don't have any speakers next to the TV, such as surround sound speakers or anything with a magnet in it.

Magnets "pull" the color from TV sets causing that green discoloration.

If that's not the case, call the manufacturer or the place you bought it and discuss warranty options......you may still be in the final few months of the warranty if it's 3 years old.

It is most likely a CRT screen since you paid $500 for it which means it needs to be degaused (demagnetized). Cost for such a procedure is very small and can be done in the home if you can find a TV technician in your area.

Likely it became magnetized because:
(1) You suddenly moved it to a new location after it has been sitting in the same location for a long time (such as when you move to a new home).
(2) Lightning strike nearby caused a magnetic surge when it struck something grounded very close to your home.
(3) Someone brought unshielded speakers (with their powerful magnets) or magnets close to the TV.
