The best way to start is to take a class at the community college, or read a good book on it. I suggest:

Photography and Digital Imaging by Marvin J. Rosen and David L. Devries, 5th edition.

It has kind of cheesy photos, but a lot of really good info on all the basics - lighting, exposure, composition, etc. Good luck!

Get a copy of "Object & Image: An Introduction to Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven.
