It was the rise of evangelical Christianity in rural areas in the 19th century. This coincided with the separation of Southern and northern Baptists due to the South's support of slavery. Competition between preachers for converts led to a "holier than thou" race that resulted in radical interpretations of the Bible, in particular that following Jesus was the only means to salvation (and that good works are irrelevant), and that particularly awful punishments awaited the non-believer. This belief system was successful in gaining and maintaining congregations, and was not subject to review or modification by any central religious authority, and so grew in radicalism.
