While I understand and appreciate where you're coming from, the fact is that the tafsirs, sirats and hadiths are important in the better understanding of the ayats which can be totally misunderstood and even have the import of the words change their meanings. I have just answered a Question which has this problem, though the intentions of the Asker were good. You can see that for yourself in the link below. I was wondering about the "Roger" because he was accusing the hadiths of having been written by Jews!?!? That's performing takfeer at it's height! Thanks Rosy for clarifying. By the way, do visit your Q again, because, I need your help there. To return to the Question on hand, the Shari'a, whether right or wrong, translates al kaanoon in accordance with it's madhab based upon the hadiths. There are many instances of that; but, I don't know if I can question them on why and if that would matter to them since they wouldn't change their ways because of my plea. EDIT I just looked at the Roger link out of curiosity and I see a very confused and demented soul !?!? First of all, he doesn't seem to know much of either al Injeel or al Qur'an! Isa bin Maryam [alayhis wa'as salaam] was known as Yahoshua or Yeshua bar Yusef el Nazrany among the Jews. Jesus is the Anglecized version of the Latin mispronunciation of Yahoshua which they made - Isaevs because they don't have the Y or J in Latin ! Anyway, his diatribe about the Nag Hammadi [which is the Apocalypse of Peter] and so on and so forth are ridiculous. But what he says here about al siratul rasool is unpardonable. He is evidently an Ajam who doesn't know that the very word sirat indicates it's by someone who accompanied Mohammad. Sirat means the Life or the Journey! and if he wishes to call Mohammad ibn Ishaq a kaffir and a Jew Convert, what will he say of the one who was born a Jew - Mohammad bin Abd'allah al Muttailib al Quraish? This is ridiculous.

Here are some Good websites :

Oh and here are some commentaries from people who have read the Quran :
http://www.miraclesofthequran.com/perfection_index.html
... the Meccans still demanded of him a miracle, and with remarkable boldness and self confidence Mohammad appealed as a supreme confirmation of his mission to the Koran itself. Like all Arabs they were the connoisseurs of language and rhetoric. Well, then if the Koran were his own composition other men could rival it. Let them produce ten verses like it. If they could not (and it is obvious that they could not), them let them accept the Koran as an outstanding evident miracle. (The well-known Arabist Hamilton Gibb of the University of Oxford)
The essential and definite element of my conversion to Islam was the Qur'an. I began to study it before my conversion with the critical spirit of a Western intellectual... There are certain verses of this book, the Qur'an, revealed more than thirteen centuries ago, which teach exactly the same notions as the most modern scientific researches do. This definitely converted me. (Ali Selman Benoist, France, Doctor of Medicine)
I have read the Sacred Scriptures of every religion; nowhere have I found what I encountered in Islam: perfection. The Holy Qur'an, compared to any other scripture I have read, is like the Sun compared to that of a match. I firmly believe that anybody who reads the Word of Allah with a mind that is not completely closed to Truth, will become a Muslim. (Saifuddin Dirk Walter Mosig)

Brother, you will hear from those who are not as open-minded as you are that you are going down a bad path.
I on the other hand, welcome you to read the Qur'an with a different mindset. Always read the verses you have a problem with in the context and time-period in which they were revealed. I think this will put a better perspective and understanding to their intended result.
The Glorious Qur'an is a fantastic divine revelation. We are so lucky that we have been blessed with such a powerful recital. The Arabic in it has no equal, the context, the meanings, the mysteries...etc.
The Qur'an never gets old on me. It's like it was meant to be my companion for my entire life!
May God guide you and us all to the Right Path, InShaAllah! Peace brother...
