Its an auto, and I would drive around with it off for the first and 2nt gear, then id put it back on, but i was just wondering if anyone knew if it would do any damage to my trans. I mean, it shifts smoother without it, and i love how it operates without it, it feels like it has a quicker throttle response. I do alot of city driving, but im going 60-70 everywhere i drive.

Overdrive (or the 5th/6th gear) is for constant speeds, like when you are on the freeway.
In city driving, you can leave it off but your gas mileage may suffer. As to damaging the transmission, I don't think you will damage your transmission by turning it on and off in lower speeds of driving.
I would definitely leave the over drive on when on the freeway or high speeds, you could damage your transmission if your speed red lines your 3rd or 4th gear.

Overdrive means that the input speed is less than 1:1 to the output speed.
Normally the highest gear on a car or highest two gear in 6 speeds are overdrives.
They are designed for fuel economy and to be less taxing on your engine (going 80mph at 2500rpms).
When you're in the city and going around 40-50 inconsistently, then turning overdrive off can stop your car from "hunting" for a gear which MAY lessen wear on the tranny.
As far as it shifting smoother *shakes head* Nissan claims this is not so. I personally have an I30 and it actually feels worse without it on.
I have also noticed, that in some circumstances, overdrive can "fall out" if it's played with too much on older cars. Meaning that the last gear is no longer available. Typically this is only a short problem and goes back to normal after a short time.

That is what it is meant for.....the high end gears like 4 or 5 (it is like a 6) meaning it will not eat as much gas as the engine is running slower when you are in the "highest of gears".
Never bad for you car. You can leave it off if you want. You pay at the pumps by visiting them sooner.

it doesnt hurt your car but you kick in the "afterburner" when you need to get past in a hurry, for instance. when in overdrive, you can press down on the pedal and it will accelerate significantly faster than out of overdrive. try it. find an open stretch and floor it up to about 120 k, with and without.

I drive with mine off periodically to help slow down hills so I don't use my breaks as much. YOu can do 60 easily with it off but on the highway just turn it back on

No problems - overdrive only comes into play once you are up to speed. Overdrive shift happens after 3rd gear.

In the city leave it off and when you reach 50 MPH turn it back on No extra wear and tear. Year model and miles would be helpful.

Your engine will rev-up higher if you go at least 45 MPH with O/D off. I believe that it's best to keep it on because it may lower the life of the engine.
