The original American Colonies flag had the UK Union flag in the upper left hand corner [next to the flag staff] with thirteen red and white stripes, one for each of the original thirteen colonies.

Sometime around c1775/1776 an American lady, name of Betsy Ross, cut out the union flag and sewed in thireen white stars on a blue background in a circle.

This was then the Battle Standard of the American Revolution.

Please note I have used the term Battle Standard to describe the flag of the American Revolution. The reason is because this particular flag was paraded in the battle line and was the recognised Battle Standard of the Continental Army.

Power to the People.

God Save the King.

The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 U.S. states and the 13 stripes represent the original Thirteen Colonies that rebelled against the British Crown and became the first states in the Union. The flag has been changed 26 times since the new, 13-state union adopted it. The 48-star version went unchanged for 47 years, until the 50-star version became official on July 4, 1960 (the first July 4 following Hawaii's admission to the union on August 21, 1959); the 47-year-record of the 48-star version was the longest time the flag went unmodified until July 4, 2007, when the current 50-star version of the Flag of the United States broke the record. There were 13 stars on the Flag in the year 1777 to 1795. That was the lowest.
