The 40 gig hard drive won't expire if that's what you are worried about. I would personally go for an 80gb PS3.

It should be, depends what you use it for.
If you find it getting full you can always switch it out for a bigger one (they use a standard 2.5inch sata HD as you see in laptops) You can pick up an 80GB one for about £60 now and prices are coming down with sizes going up.
It wouldn't invalidate your warrenty (it's part of the design) or you could use an external one.
