She was tested and had all her shots since she was a baby. I had her on Revolution once a month. She was one year old. Then, just this week, she quit eating and drinking and hid under the bed. When we took her to the vet yesterday, he said she was full of luekemia and he put her to sleep. We are devastated and can't believe it happened especially since she was tested as a baby and got all of her shots. She was always healthy and active and loving. Then, in just 3 or 4 days she is gone.

yes, she was tested negative and got her leukemia shots and revolution. Yesterday he tested her because we took her in saying she wasn't eating. I was thinking urinary tract infection but when he did blood work, she was full of leukemia and I can't believe it since she was only one year old and was fine until this week.

Did the vet test her again yesterday???? The vet can't know the cat had FeLV if they did not test it, but you do not mention a test.
Was the cat vaccinated for FeLV??

i'm so sorry for your loss, especially as it came so suddenly. what a devestating thing to be going thru.

no leukemia vaccine (or any other vaccince) is 100% effective. she may have contracted it sometime after her last test, or the test may have been a false negative if she still had any of her momma's anitbodies running thru her system. it does take a little bit of time to show positive on a test, too, so if she'd just been exposed to it days before, it may not have turned a test yet.

FeLV is much like human AIDS. it isn't that disease that most cats die of, it's the secondary diseases or conditions that come from having a lowered immune system that really take it's toll. it can destroy the body quickly or it can take a long time, every case is different. and animals hide illness very well, especially if it doesn't affect activities like eating or socialability. so by the time she really starts to show symptoms, it can be pretty advanced. it's not your fault you didn't notice any issues with her - cats are very good at hiding it. nature made them that way. you did everything a responsible pet owner should have done, and your kitty probably got a longer life than she may have elsewhere.

peace to you and your family.

Leukemia, like all cancers doesn't show till it's well established.

Are you sure she was tested when she had her final kitty shots for Leukemia???
Did her shots include the Leukemia prevention? It's not in all cat shots. They are supposed to test for Leukemia at a specific point and then if none is found, give the shot that includes the leukemia prevention.

It's very hard... very sad... but it can happen.

Many times..the disease wont show up in a test until after 14 weeks of age. If she was tested much younger..it was probably a false negative.

It's not unusual for the first early test to be a false negative.
Cats should be tested when they're older to prevent a false reading.
