I have worked for several financial institutions in the past 30 years. Based on my experience, I suggest that the post office is probably not holding your mail. Rather, banks and other lenders often get backed up posting payments to accounts. They will deny this, and will blame the delay on the post office.

Use on-line bill pay if your bank offers it. Most banks do, and with many it's free. That way you have conformation that it was paid.
It's probably not the post office. (Although there are isolated instances; I had one Express envelope that took 4 weeks to deliver--the PO admitted that it was their fault.)
CC companies are required by law to credit a payment the day they receive it. Use a return receipt when you mail it, that way you'll know for sure when they get it. If it doesn't show as posted on that date, report them. (GE credit, which handles a lot of store name credit cards, got into real trouble over this several years ago.)

I agree with Diane. Post office has no reason to hold your mail. Try to send one register mail to your creditor and see how long the payment post. By law, they have to post the payment as soon as they receive it. If you have record that they receive your payment by certain day and didn't post, you can file a complaint.
My condo association is only up the street from where I live. It takes them 10 days to post my payment. As long as they don't charge me late fee, I'm fine with it. If they do, they'll have a problem because it shouldn't take 10 days to delivery the mail that their office is only 5 blocks away.
Check with the post master. I'm sure it's not their fault. If it's possible, make payment on line. I do make 99% payments online. You'll get the confirmation when you make payment online.

Yes. We do it all the time when we go on trips. In fact, the post office hates it if you don't ask them to hold your mail. It just piles up in the box.

That sounds like a mistake.
Make sure you had the correct address and zip code on it, even better, print the mailing address from the USPS web site and include the zip+4. I have never had a first class letter take more than 3 days in the USA.

They dont hold mail. If you are having this problem, you need to talk to your local postmaster. Are you sure that they delay isnt on the other end with processing your payments? Some companies have been known to say that the payment was late (when it really wasnt) just to add late charges.
