This is an old 12 gauge (2 3/4" shells) box lock side by side ejecting style shotgun. The .729 is the bore size. These shotguns were made in the mid 70's and can be worth anywhere from $2,000 - $5,000 depending on use and condition. I would clean the entire gun and keep it as a keepsake. Make sure to clean the stock of the gun too as the wood needs treatment/protection as it gets older. This is a nice gun..

Either get a .177 cal pellet gun or a .22 cal pellet gun and make sure they are over 700 fps because usually anything lower, unless you are a marksman, will not kill cleanly. Believe it or not squirrel skin is a lot tougher than you think, when I had BB guns that shot at 500 fps the BBs woould bounce of and the squirrels would laugh at me. I now own a gamo big cat 1200 it was a great deal for the price it shoots as fast and hits as hard as most $200-$400 rifles at 1200 feet per second. It only cost me $120 and it passes through squirrels with ease when you are using the correct pellets. Crosman premier hollow points are the best hunting pellet in my opinion because they are accurate and get the job done. The only thing is that the big cat comes with a horrible scope that you should replace with 3-9 x 40 or something like that. (It comes with a 4 x 32, which is awful)

I do not know alot about guns, however, the serial number 729 (I believe that is what it is) is low - that would make it quite valuable. Is this a black power rifle? My suggestion would be to locate a professional who could appraise it.

The value is in the eyes of the beholder. Was it one of your dads favorites? I think you would like to know what it is worth. You may value this pistol more than anyone else because it was you late fathers gun. To me, its of no value!
