Just wondering your opinions on this matter. We own a 5 year old Wired Haired Pointing Griffon (a pointer dog).
My mom usually feeds him 2 cup fulls a day of his food. I keep telling her that 1 cup is plenty for him. Plus he's over weight.
What do you all think? Is it good to feed him 2 cup fulls a day (not at once...at two different times during the day...when he wants it), or just one cup full in the morning?
Thanks!!

It depends on what the food is, how active the dog is, etc..

What I typically do is look at the recommended amount on the bag. I start on the low to mid end of what it says to feed, and then if the dog still seems hungry, I slowly increase it. If the dog starts gaining weight and shouldn't be, then decrease it.

If you want to get more technical about it, here is an equation to figure out what your dog should be eating:
(desired wt in lbs)/2.2 X 30 + 70 = kcals per day

note #1: The kcals (or may be noted as 'Calories' with a capital "C") are either on the bag of dog food, on the food company's website, or you may have to call the company and ask.
note #2: Again, this isn't a set-in-stone way to determine feeding. It all depends on the activity level and such of your dog.

I do prefer to split up feeding time into 2 meals a day. It keeps the metabolism going better.

Also keep treats in mind. We tend to forget about treats, but they add calories. Treats should make up no more tahn 10% of a dog's diet. If the dog is overweight, try switching to low-calorie alternatives for treats, such as peices of carrot, green beans, peas, etc..

Are you talking about standard 8oz measuring cups? There is a huge difference in what people consider a cup when feeding a dog. I've heard people say their dog only eats a cup a day. It was one of those huge 32oz soda cups.
Keep in mind each dog is different. How many treats is this dog getting? If your dog is overweight on two cups daily he is getting too much for for the amount of energy he is using. I wouldn't recommend cutting the dog's food intake in half in one day. Slowly cut him back and increase exercise. My preference is to feed my dogs twice daily. Plenty only feed once. It's your choice. Could there be a medical reason your dog is overweight? Could he have a thyroid condition? Dogs can have an under active thyroid (hypothyroidism) causing them to pack on the pounds. This can be determined by blood work by the vet. Good luck!

If he is over weight a cut in food is best. it doesn't have to be just once. If he is us to being fed twice give him a 1/2 cu in the monring and 1/2 cup in the evening.

usually it is good to give him a cup in the morning and a half a cup in the afternoon and for the over weight thing just make sure you take him on walks when ever you go out to run or jog

Hope I Helped!!!

Our lab has a weight problem too - he gets 1 or 1.5 cups twice a day, depending on how his weight is doing.
