I have bad credit and owe some debt. I am working on it and trying to pay it off. My boyfriend is in the Air Force and if we get married would they hold it against him? I know the military frowns on debt but mine would have been aquired prior to our marriage. Some of it is when I was younger and just stupid and the rest happened during my first marriage.

Nah, you'll have to work out your debt as a couple and financial guidance will be available to him, but his pay rate and quarters will be the same as another married man of his rank. It could affect certain billet assignments where they do a financial assessment. My husband is in the Marine Corps and for his screening for Drill Instructor duty, each time he had to give them all of our financial information including debt. They want to make sure that you are able to adequately provide for your family and that there is no undue financial stress. Just doing their "regular job", I don't think it would be an issue unless your financial situation causes him to be distracted from work, or unless you get to the point where you are bouncing checks or have debt in collections that is not being paid regularly.

If he has a security clearance his level of debt (your dept will be assumed to be 'his' debt also) is taken into consideration.

Get yourself to some sort of credit counseling and this will be taken into consideration.

if he has a Clearance, then yes, it could pose a problem and he could lose the Clearance. they will look at it as joint debt the minute you get married, meaning that he could be unduly pressured into selling secrets in order to help you get rid of your debt.
