Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the commemoration of the forty days before Easter It is the period when Jesus went into the desert to fast for forty days and forty nights prior to his crucifixion. It is also the beginning of Lent where we are asked to offer up sacrifices to God ,in preparation for his passion. The sign of the cross in ashes on the forehead of the faithful on Ash Wednesday reminds them that they are dust and unto dust they shall return.

Back in the day people would cover themselves in ashes as a sign of repentance and knowledge of their filth before God. Ash Wednesday is a time for people to reflect on the necessity of the sacrifice of Jesus in order to be made righteous before God. It is also marks the 40 days of Lent when some choose to fast something in their lives as a sacrifice to their relationship with God.
