My dog is close to twelve months and ever since he was born he slept inside the house. He hates staying outside by himself but now that my grandparents are moving in he has to go outside. During the night he barks loudly for the majority of the night. What can i do to make him be comfortable?
He is a maltese x shi tzu if that makes any difference...

Dogs are capable of living outdoors. It's natural for them to live outdoors. But I'm sure they prefer living indoors. It's probably the same for humans. You can make a dog live outside in the cold, but you shouldn't expect the dog to be happy about it.

You are going to be faced with 2 problems here. If the dog barks all night neighbours will complane and you will be fined. If it keeps on the dog will be taken away.
More importantly such a small dog should never be left outside. Anything could happen to it. Be stolen, other animals get to it etc. Most of all he probably won;t live through a winter outside.
You either need to presuade your grandparents to let him stay inside in your room or sadly find him a new home.
I really hope you can work something out for both of your sakes.
Edit: If your grandfather is ill won't it be worse for him to have to contend with a dog barking outside all the time? He will never get any rest.
No dog's are not supposed to be outside. Especially small ones like this. They just won't survive.
If the dog can't be in your bedroom then it's better to lose him to a loving home than to lose him through cold, being torn apart by other animals etc that you will blame yourself for. Maybe a friend or family member could take him so as you can still see him on a regular basis?
He just can;t be outside hon. Honest!

There is no reason that your dog needs to be outdoors. Even with your grandfather being ill. Your cross is one that does not shed much. A good compromise would be to groom your dog to keep any dander down. keeping him clipped down will help and weekly baths will be ok if you use a very mild puppy shampoo. Keep him away from your grandparents if they do not like dogs but you can't keep a small breed dog like him outside, its just not safe.

My question is why does the dog HAVE to be outside? I don't understand that. Of course he is gonna bark, he is lonely, and does not understand why he is being punished. He is a small dog that shouldn't be outside all the time anyways. If you can't take care of your dog properly then maybe you should give it to some one who can.

I feel for your doggie. He has been used to staying inside and now he has to go outside. Of course he barks. He's saying that he's lonely and he wants to be with you. He doesn't understand why you don't want him with you (in his way of thinking). Since he is a small dog, why should he have to be put outside? He simply will not survive the cold and he may be attacked by animals or stolen and killed or stolen by people who steal dogs for dog fighting rings. I hope that you would not want him to end up in a dog fighting ring. Why can't he sleep in your room with you? My dachshund sleeps in my room with me. If you don't want him or can't keep him inside anymore, you should find him a new home. If you don't think that you can do this yourself, the people at Pets Mart can help you. There is an organization called A.R.K. (Animals Rescued with Kindness) that brings animals there to be adopted. You should go to Pets Mart one week and speak to one of the volunteers and let them know of your doggie's situation. A.R.K. has many volunteers who will foster a dog or cat until they go to their "forever home" (their new owners). Please don't put your lovely little doggie out in the cold.

His breed does make a difference. He's not meant to be an outside dog and he's upset. "He hates staying outside the house" You pretty much answered yourself. And to make him comfortable you can rehome him. If the dog has to be outside 24/7 then you don't need him.

Put your grandparents outside and leave the dog in!
If he is kicked outside because of your grandparents moving, be careful he may learn to resent them. The best way to stop him barking would be to try a citronella collar, as the dog barks it squirts a jet of citronella under their nose, it is harmless but not pleasant.
I kinda feel for your dog though, his life is being up rooted.

Well this may become a problem considering he is used to sleeping inside. He is confused and feels like he is forgotten about.
Is there any possible way he may sleep inside and in a cage? Small dogs can actually be in danger considering their sizes, plus being tied up where raccoons and etc can harm them. Have you thought about colder weather? (if that applies to you)

Dogs are pack animals and they crave companionship. You're denying him of his psychological needs by keeping him outside. If he can't stay inside then you should probably find another home for him. A dog of his age and breed should definitely not be outside unattended.

Awww the poor thing. Don't you have a basement or a garage that he can sleep in at least????? If you do, put his crate or a bed in there for him.
How would you like to be that small and having to sleep outside with big scary wild animals around?
