anyone know the story of the rich guy and Lazarus?

-"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' and so on...

now my question is, -while the rich man disurves hell and torment for what he has done- how can he be locked away in hell eternally while Lazarus was only tormented for lets say 40 years thats certainly not fair right?

to birdy:

hi Birdy, what you say is unfortunately not true, to begin :
God didn't create sin the Devil did
In the bible says God created man to life eternally in peace with him; God rules over earth and paradise. God had a lot of Angels, his brightest and most beautiful Angel was Lucifer. God loved him so much that he gave him the work of highest Angel; but Lucifer got a strange feeling he never had before ;jealousy, jealousy comes to hate and hate comes to sin so lucifer went to war against God to replace his thrown.this means Lucifer the devil and not God created sin Sin is a curce that always be there God could reject sin from coming to man but he didn't do so; what God did do is make a pact with the Devil.
God did this to see who was worthy more of the thrown, God himself or the devil. thats why God gave humans a choise: to be good or to be bad and sin; this is a test to see of we are worthy to enter paradise, its all logical Birdy, you just didn't rid the bible well enough.

It apparently has something to do with love.

Though your mind has to be warped to understand how inflicting eternal suffering is loving. Me, I wuold buy chocolates to show love. God, he throw you into a furnce forever. Go figure.

The teaching that there is an eternal hell in which hordes of mankind will suffer eternal punishment can be a difficult doctrine to accept. We hear so much about God's infinite love and how He desires that all men be saved (1 Tim. 2:4). However, those who develop their theologies based upon the "gentle" side of God do so with an incomplete picture. Not only is God loving (1 John 4:8-10), gracious (Exo. 33:19; 1 Pet. 2:3), and merciful (Exodus 34:6; Psalm 67:1; James 5:11), but He is also holy (Isaiah 6:3; Rev. 4:8), just ( Neh. 9:32-33; 2 Thess. 1:6), and hates sin (Psalm 5:5-6; Hab. 1:13). God punishes the sinner (Jer. 50:31; Ez. 44:12; Matt. 25:46; 2 Thess. 1:9; 2 Pet. 2:9; Heb. 10:29).
The Bible teaches that there is a fiery hell, a place that Jesus warned people about.

"And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the eternal fire," (Matt. 18:8).

The idea of a loving God sending people to hell for eternity is not easy to accept. Why would God, who is full of mercy and grace, send people to a place of torment for ever and ever for not trusting in Jesus even though they are nice people, or never heard of Jesus, or were sincerely trying to find God? Is that fair? Is that right?

Did the rich man go to hell for being rich? Is it described that the rich man spent all his life in the ways of evil and this man never done any good, wasn't a loving farther etc, that he simply went to hell for being wealthy. That he ignored one beggar. Even if we had compassion for all in the world there is often little an individual can do against the great suffering we see today. One can donate to charity, help out at centres, even go work in Africa for say Christian Aid. The point is you could empty your wallet to the next poor person you see, which may help a bit, but you can't take on the suffering of the world on your own when you have to consider living ones own life. It would be for God to have such power to end suffering on a global level. Shall we all start declaring ourselves Gods.

God doesn't put anyone to or in hell, they do it to themselves.

This happened in the time of Jesus' ministry, hence the rich man would have known about eternal consequences. Even if it wasn't in Jesus' time and it was before, note that the rich man obviously knows about God and would have known the commandments and God's law as the rich man knew who Abraham was, even called him Father Abraham, suggesting that he was in the family line of Abraham, and he knew it, hence, he would have known what righteous was and what was not and that there was an eternal promise.

So he knowingly traded in eternal life in the presence of God for earthly treasures and disobeying God's commands to help those less fortunate.

Your life on earth determines your eternal outcome, everyone is free to make the choice of where they will spend it. It IS equal opportunity, God is not responsible for what choice we make.

It is simple, God is all forgiving, but one must ask for that forgiveness and really mean it in order for him to forgive. Another human error that could be easily corrected, but humans are to proud.

It's my belief that a loving, forgiving God would never condemn or pass judgment on a person. He would forgive you for just about any sin you could commit.

Rather, When you die and confront God, you become completely aware of your actions and the morality behind each decision you made.
Those people who feel so guilty because of the way they lived their life, that they can't stand to be in the presence of God will turn their backs on a God that still loves them.
They'll condemn themselves to their own personal hell of guilt and grief and torment.

people say that god made a hell for all the demons and devils, because they cant be on earth with gods children and he wont allow them in heaven, so they wander until judgment day and that's when he punishes all evil and throws them into hell.

now, we are evil also, so we kinda get thrown into hell also if we don't have Jesus. Remember, god is a god of old. He is the kind of god that burns with power and anger at the drop of a dime and he punishes all evil. God is like the gods that they worshiped in Egypt, he sends plagues and causes people to be sick and strikes the people, but.... thanks to Jesus, god made a covenant and he has love and compassion for us so that we wont have to face his wrath. So....those who don't follow god or don't accept Jesus will face his wrath

gods trying to be nice to us, but we still sin with a passion, that's why the rich man got what he deserved, nothing is fair, and god gave him a chance to do right and help the poor. (also, u read in ur bible that god takes care and has sympathy for the poor)

Many contemporary beliefs about Hell view it this way: God does not put people or condemn people to Hell, but rather they choose the path away from God by their actions in life and so lead their own way away from God's presence (Hell).
I personally, do not share this worldview. I believe in a loving and eternally present God, one with the entire Universe with whose presence, with whose reality, all things must eventually become one - which can only be like a heavenly state.
I cannot believe in a thing like Hell. I also cannot believe that the Bible is true in every word because it comes to use through generations and generations of human interference, even if it began with the direct word of God.

Then that means you support the injustice of the richman. When Lazarus was eating with his dogs, he didn't even care him. Was that fair? Then, God is also doing fair by tormenting him eternally. God might have given a lot of chance for him to turn his ways. But he was stubborn. So don't ever question God's justice. God's court is full of justice.

There must be a payment for sins , Jesus or your self in Hell . Lazarus being rich spiritually , trusted and believed Jesus as his savior . The rich man was quite content in what he had , probably trusted in himself or his riches. Our sins sends us to hell ,God will only judge us from the bible

The only people that I know of that believe that God condemns people to Hell are Calvinist. They believe that God predestined men to Hell , not because of anything man has done but just because God chose to do it. I believe that God allows each man to make a choice to accept his son Jesus or reject Jesus. If we accept the invitation He will save us , If we reject we are condemned to Hell. ( OUR CHOICE )
There is a difference between being fair and being just. God is JUST but according to our definition , He does not always seem to be fair .

God is not constrained by human notions of what is "fair". Mankind has been given plenty of "fair warning" about what awaits people who mock God and brush Him aside. Go back and re-read the end of that parable - the part where the rich man asks if his brothers can be warned about this terrible place he's in now, and surely, the rich man says, they will pay heed if someone returns from the dead to warn them.....
