Doing bad things is a definition of sin, but it is incomplete. The best definition of sin I have ever heard is this: Sin arises from lack of knowledge of the true Self, the indwelling Holy Spirit. Sin is, to a certain extent, unavoidable until we gain this knowledge, not just as an intellectual concept, but also as an experience. When we experience the presence of God or Pure Being in daily life, then we will spontaneously live without sin. The best way to gain that experience is through spiritual practices such as meditation, contemplation, lectio divina, centering prayer, etc.

"The money from the guilt offerings and sin offerings was not brought into the temple of the LORD ; it belonged to the priests."

– 2 Kings 12.16

The priestly "protection racket" required the criminalizing of the whole of humanity through the doctrine of Sin. In a world run by clerical gangsters, the writ of Holy Mother Church was enforced by sadism and torture. For more than a thousand years, the henchmen of Christ inflicted a cruel barbarism on every community they encountered. Law was replaced by Divine Right, scientific method criminalized, ancient medical knowledge lost for a millennium. Women, fortunate to be domestic slaves, might find themselves in enforced celibacy, joyless marriage or burnt as a witch. Roasting heretics became popular entertainment and a religious duty.

No. It is not the definition of sin. Sin is everything that separates you from God's will for us.

All good people do not go to heaven but all forgiven people go to heaven. God takes sin seriously, but He provided us the way out from His own wrath.

Any thing contrary to the word of God is a sin . ( a bad thought ,disobedience , swearing ,not telling the truth ,lust ,fornicating ,wanting what others have (covet ) etc...) We've all done most of them . That is why we all need to accept a savior in Jesus or spend eternity in hell to pay for those sins

the underlying idea is that sins not only seperate us from God, but also keep us from being all that we can be. the english word ''sin'' is derived from an old english (or maybe saxon?) archery term that means ''to miss the mark.'' so when a person sins, he ''misses the mark,'' and does not fulfill his potential. this applies in christianity and judaism both.

Matthew 15
Defilement Comes from Within
1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, 2 “Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”
3 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’;[a] and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’[b] 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— 6 then he need not honor his father or mother.’[c] Thus you have made the commandment[d] of God of no effect by your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:
8 ‘ These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And[e]honor Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
9 And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”[f]

10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”
