You might find the book "Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon" interesting. It's written by Daniel Dennet, and talks about what evolutionary purpose religion may have served, and how the very nonsensical elements of it might have been what caused it to "stick" in people's minds.
You are more likely to think over and over about something you can just *almost* understand, rather than something you don't understand at all, or something you completely comprehend. The mystery that is contained in religions may be the very thing that causes people to get "hooked in" and stay that way in the face of evidence that questions their beliefs.

Hi Sam: Theologically your premise is false. From a Biblical perspective, man and angel are are created beings and therefore finite by their very creation. Therefore, no created being can have "free will" - because they are finite. The real issue is - given that the Creator-God of the Scriptures is 100% sovereign and that man is finite by his very nature, why is man NOT a robot? That is the fascinating theological question. Yet, it has a very nice and rigorous answer. Too many modern-day folks are theologically ignorant and know little to nothing of theology. We live in an age where so-called "science" (my own field) is thoroughly misunderstood. So you see there is not a paradox in your question because your premise is false. Nevertheless, great question, it shows that you are thinking and keep up the good work.

Man created their gods because of fear of the dark and the unknown. Religions were created to control other people. This worked out so well that religions have taken over the world. Only the few who have the freedom of thought can say that god and religion is all nonsense.
Peace, only without religion.

Even today, I see lots of people making assumptions based on a little bit of knowledge, usually a bit of misunderstanding/misinformation, and a lot of assumption.
The human mind likes to think it has pieced things together in a coherent way, even if that way is flawed.

"If God didn't exist, it would have been necessary to invent him."
"Human beings are like electrical cords looking for a source of power greater than themselves to plug into."
Read the Bible again with an open mind and sincere heart. God was not created by mankind. God revealed Himself to them in very real and personal and powerful ways....up to and including through His Son, Jesus Christ.
And He continues to reveal Himself every day to those of us who believe.
I'm sorry but if you don't believe in Him - you are blind and will never see these revelations.

Because that simply isn't human nature. We are inquisitive by design - that we are high up on the food chain is credit to our minds solving and working out survival techniques.
I don't blame our ancestors for trying to understand the Universe by means of a God, it was the most plausible answer at the time.

Sorry, Jesus was the Son of God.
God, the Father, did not come to this earth as a sacrifice for our sins, He sent His Son to be a sacrifice.
This proves that God really cares about His creation. Would you sacrifice a child of yours for the sins of people who don't even exist yet? That is exactly what God did.
