Oh my dear how very little you really know!!!! NOT all over weight people " are always sitting on the couch and eat and watch TV all day". There happens to be other reasons.
Such as, medicines they have to take, some cause weight gain. Lack of mobility, some people are disabled and cant walk or exercise like they want to due to maybe a severely bad back, maybe they are bound to a wheelchair, depression, which IS a disease can cause weight gain.
I would suggest that you not be so very narrow minded and look up some causes of this problem and not just ASSume what you are!!!!!

I have read most of the other answers as well. Yes there are medical reasons as well. But, they only accounts for a small number of cases.
But we all have seen fat people eat 4 hot dogs and a big sodas for breakfast, half a bag of cookies before lunch, and buffets for lunch, and bag of chip for snacks before dinner and a pizza for dinner. Etc...
Please be honest... count your calories.... Each day we should only consume 2000 calories, less if overweight. A whopper is already 700!!! an 8 oz soda is 140+.
Most of my obese pts are either consuming tooooooo much calories in the range of 5000-7000 calories. And they did not even realize it. They can not burn the calories because they do not exercise!!!
Why can't they exercise??? Because the fat replaced the muscles= they are too weak to get up and move. They move slower and burn less calories as well because their metabolic rates also slows!!! Or the excess weight over time has destroyed their knees and back and it hurts too move!!! That is why it is so hard to loose weight... it is so hard. Not to mention their denials... I am not fat, I am just curvaceous, etc...
This answer is long and perhaps too direct but it's the truth... I am sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings...

Scientist are learning that genetics are the most critical factor in weight.

Everyone has a natural weight. Most people stop gaining weight when they get above 40 pounds their natural weight.

There is something about people who are very obese that makes them gain weight beyond that 40 pounds. We don't know what it is yet.

Of course diet and exercise play an important role in your weight. People who are extremely obese don't go to the gym everyday. But people are complex, and you can't point a finger at a fat person and say they are that way because they sit and eat all day.

I would think that this is the reason the majority of people are fat yes. I am sure there are a few who generally cannot help it but I do think that this number is very low indeed.

Some have a thyroid problem or a low metabolism
or they just eat fattening foods and then don't burn them off.

Dieting slows their metabolism down and makes most of them regain their weight plus more weight. It is a vicious cycle.

there are a myriad of reasons, depression , thyroid problems, or just genetics. weight has NOTHING to do with laziness , only a skinny person would say that.
