Yes. Mice are excellent climbers and jumpers. Most likely, they are simply jumping over the traps or climbing into your room (perhaps the doorway isn't even how they're getting in).
Instead, place a number of traps along walls (mice tend to run along walls), especially behind things (a desk for instance) or under things (like a dresser).
If your mouse problem is especially bad, I would suggest calling an exterminator ASAP. These little buggers reproduce VERY quickly, (every four weeks can make up to 12 new little ones per female mouse who are ready to make even more) and if your infestation is bad enough, quite frankly, you will not be able to put down enough traps to catch them all before they reproduce and make many more.
Good luck--I dealt with mice a few years ago and it wasn't easy! (But I did beat them!)

Just out of curiosity, what will you do when a mouse gets trapped? Leave it to starve to death?
If you have a problem with mice you could try poison. Apparently it's not an unpleasant death, and is probably preferable to starving while stuck to a trap.

I agree with the plugging up of holes, we had one that was using the vent for the tumble drier to get into the kitchen. Seeing as it was a defunct hole, we cemented it up. Mice have a natural aversion to mint, and will generally avoid it. Plant it around the exterior of your house as a deterrent as well as potting some around your home. You have to make sure that food like cereals are in plastic containers otherwise theyll just eat the boxes to get into them. If you notice any spills of food get rid of it because mice can pass on germs and diseases to humans too. What we did learn was that mice are suckers for peanut butter so we put that on a snap trap and managed to get rid of the two that had gotten into the garden and were causing havoc.

Well, if the cow can jump over the moon then why not mice over a sticky trap?

Not really. Either the stick is wore out or they must've found another way to pass therefore avoiding the trap.
