Kokura

"Virtually everybody knows the name of the B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima - the Enola Gay - but how about the one that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki 3 days later? This B-29 was known as "Bock's Car", and Nagasaki was not its original target - the intended target city was Kokura, which escaped as the bomber was under orders to attack only a clear target and the city was shrouded in smog at the time. Nagasaki was the first alternative target city."

Kyoto, Hiroshima, Yokohama, and Kokura were the original four cities on the target list. Henry Stimson, the Secretary of War, removed Kyoto from the target list... supposedly he had gone there on his honeymoon and enjoyed the city so much that he didn't want to blow it to kingdom come.

When the orders to drop the bomb were finalized, Hiroshima was chosen as the primary target, weather permitting. If the weather over Hiroshima wasn't acceptable, the pilot had the option to bomb Kokura, Niigata, or Nagasaki. If the war had continued all four cities were scheduled to be hit, as soon as an atomic weapon was available.

Kyoto was originally on the target list, but Secretary of War Henry Stimson wanted the city spared. Kyoto was the ancient capital of Japan and Stimson wanted to spare such a historical place from total destruction.
