That would depend on the Atheist.I consider myself Atheist (no belief in a deity or supreme being) but believe in the possibility of something beyond death. However, I do not believe in any religious description of any kind.I don't buy into the whole "heaven" and "hell" scenario. My guess is that when we die we release the electric energy in our bodies into the universe.Perhaps not conscious.Perhaps so.Either way, I wouldn't put much stock in trying to figure out something that can only be known once you actually die.Believing you know what is beyond death is a symptom of a psychiatric issue. So, I don't even see the point in trying to explain the unknown unless you're just trying to control the behavior of the fearful or are trying to alleviate your own fears about death.

There is variety in what different atheists believe. Atheism only means that a person doesn't believe there is a god or deity involved. Some Buddhists are atheists who believe we have a soul or energy that reincarnates. I have an atheist friend who believes we have spirit energy that goes onto a higher plane of existence after we die, no god or deities involved. I am a skeptic and I say we just don't know but based on evidence or lack of evidence it sure doesn't seem like anything happens after we die. I will return to nature from whence I came. It won't bother me since I won't know.

I believe that nothing happens... And really, I'd say that was actually better than 'Heaven' or 'Hell', since eternity's a pretty long time, really.
Of course, atheism is only a lack of belief in a deity, so Buddhists are atheists, and they believe in reincarnation. Atheism has nothing to do with belief or lack of belief in an afterlife.

Atheism has nothing to do with belief in an afterlife. Nothing, at all, in any way. Just because most atheists are secular doesn't mean all are. Stop confusing atheism with a religion or set of beliefs. Most of us believe that we just rot in the ground and that's the end, but Buddhist atheists, for example, believe in reincarnation. ALL ATHEISM IS IS A LACK OF BELIEF IN GOD.

The ONLY thing all atheists have in common is that atheists do NOT believe that invisible sky swoopers exist - good ones or bad ones.
After that we're on our own.
SO, what do I think happens to us after we die?
Like every other living entity (Flora or Fauna) when we die all our molecules are let loose and they are all recycled into new entities.
Of course you want me to contemplate the soul and all that other woo-woo stuff that xians hypothesise about. There is no woo-woo stuff in reality.
You want me to mention your heaven and hell. Neither 'place' exists.
You want me to be frightened at the thought of death. I'm not in the least bit afraid.

I'm answering this question based off of what a friend of mine believes happens.
Nothing. He thinks that we are buried in the ground or turned to ashes and that our bodies become one with the Earth in an organic way, not in a spiritual way at all. He doesn't believe in souls so there is no transition to another world, you are simply just gone. Nice huh?

Nothing happens.
Your just off, like a tv, or like a car without a battery.
Gone, dead, that's it.
-That's me (or dare I say, most of us?)
Other Atheists can have any belief they want.
Atheist simply means without god(s).

Usually we are buried and then begin decomposition. Sometimes we are cremated and turn to dust.
I suppose some people are left in ditches to rot.

There is not a single belief about death for atheists. Though more will be sure that after death there is nothing.
