The love of my life was an intense, creative, passionate and stubborn-as-hell individual named Patrick. I fell in love with him when I was 17 because he was bursting full of love for life. We were each others' firsts and all that.... shared some truly amazing and beautiful experiences for which I will always be thankful. Also faced the perils of "real life," scraping pennies together to make rent. And let's face it.... both of us had Bipolar disorder raging untreated through our little skulls..... makes for a lot of passion, but also a lot of pain and chaos and anger.... etc....
There's no neat way to tie this one up, really. Bipolar disorder took Patrick's life a year and a half ago. I'm fighting it myself now, with much more help than he and I ever realized was available -- but not without the occasional twinge of survivors' guilt. Plus, this man was my partner in every sense of the word... sometimes I still just miss him like hell.
Now I don't want to portray myself as pitifully pining away for a dead boyfriend -- I've had other lovers, even a serious relationship or two since his passing. I am still very much capable of loving an individual in a meaningful way. But ask me about the epitome of love, and there's no question who comes to mind....

He is my ex. He was--and still is--the most fabulous person I have ever met. Brilliant, kind, generous (to a fault!), loving, ....the list goes on and on.
I did not choose to stay with him because sometimes, simply, love is NOT enough. Everyday living was just too hard with him, and we had to part ways. It is a sad reality and it is where the sappy movie/storybook ends and real life begins. Sometimes those we love aren't someone with whom we belong. He doesn't bring out the best in you, and you don't in him.
I will always. always hold him dear, and love him eternal.

Immediately after marriage it was the wife. After our children getting married, it is the children and after few years the love may be for our grand children. Time changes. Love also changes.
