First off, don't call it a diet, change your LIFESTYLE, if it's only temporary.. you will go back to gaining weight, something we don't want to happen. Instead, after you lose your weight, keep your weight stable! --- With that being said.. I'll continue
Start off by getting a notebook and recording EVERYTHING you eat, read the labels and record the calories, (I'll mention a website you can use in my sources also) A good calorie intake you can use is 1450, ( Just don't go under 1200, or over 1900 )
Cut out all those greasy and artery clogging foods such as french fries, you'll be doing you and your heart a favor! There are many foods to avoid, try limiting sugar, sodium, and fat. If you drink whole milk, replace it with 2% or even water! If you drink coke.. I highly advise you to stop, you can easily rack up on calories by drinking a few day. The best drink you can have is water, and it's the cheapest too :]. If you have trouble with it at first, try getting flavored water, or buy bottled water, it tastes better than tap water. Cut out going out and eating, it's harder to track your calories, and very easy to pig out. Try eating less meat and more fruits (Apples, Oranges, and bananas are my favorites) and vegetables (Tomatoes, celery, and broccoli) Don't boil them, as it takes away valuable nutrients, steaming them is an alternative though. My doctor told me to not eat grapes, corn, or potatoes, as they can be high calorie foods.
Start eating breakfast! Not only does it keep your metabolism up, but it also keeps you from pigging out at lunch! (Try eating a banana and some cereal for breakfast, anything is better than nothing!) Try to eat more in the morning, and less in the afternoon. Start eating more smaller meals throughout the day instead of three big meals, this helps those cravings also! Be sure to take small bites and chew the food well, while savoring it all. If you eat chicken and fish, peel off the skin before eating it, the skin has a lot of fat in it.
If the cravings seem to overpower you, try eating a sugarless gum (REALLY helpful, it speeds up your digestive system also) Or try some new hobbies, go outside, look at new websites on the computer, call friends. I advise you to stop watching Tv!! The food commercials can totally make you want to pig out on everything in your fridge, not to mention you're more likely to get distracted during the commercials. After you eat, you should also try brushing your teeth, it'll keep you from being tempted for a second course!
You really should start exercising, it really helps your health! Exercise about thirty minutes after breakfast, this helps speed up your digestion and you won't be hungry when you're done exercising. Not to mention, if you wait until the afternoon, you may procrastinate and "wait" until tomorrow to do it, when in reality, you will never start exercising.. If you need exercise ideas, look around on the web! A few I have are basic exercises such as sit-ups, lunges, push ups, jumping jacks etc. If you want something a bit more funner you could get a jump rope, a mini-trampoline, or get a dog and start walking her. If you don't mind spending some money, you could buy a bicycle, a treadmill, or you could start going to the gym. You could also try some exercise videos. Here's a site that may help. http://www.exercisetv.tv/ Anything that involves movement is fine!
Make sure you get enough sleep (You burn more calories while sleeping than Tv!) Start taking multivitamins, and don't use diet pills, if you read the labels closely, it says COMBINED with diet AND exercise. Start out exercising and eating less (Counting calories) And you'll be sure to lose weight!
Last of all, you have to be prepared mentally.. Get yourself motivated! Don't think negatively, think of how your good decisions are helping out your body. Remember, we only have one body! Don't make up excuses either, be strict, but reward yourself with gifts (Not food, try things like a manicure, a puppy, anything!) Really sorry it was long.. I summarized all the tips I knew! Hope I helped, you WILL lose your weight, and you'll look wonderful in your prom dress! Good luck!

There's a lot of resources to help you lose weight, but doing it in a panic for a dress may backfire on you. Basically, you cut calories, eat healthy foods, and exercise more.
But there are a lot of good looking women who are overweight. Take a look at some old pics of Oprah and Queen Latifah -- I'm sure you can find evening wear that looks good, no matter what you weigh.
But, if you are overweight, you should try and lose it for your health. Good luck!
