Hawaii chose to become a U.S. state. In 1959, over 90% of Hawaiians chose for Hawaii to become a state and stop being a territory.
"140000 votes cast, less than 8000 rejected the Admission Act of 1959."

It's not sovereign anymore by choice.
If you find out what businesses they operate, don't use them. Casually suggest the same to other military people. If a locally owned business discriminates based on race, or military status, you can give that information to Legal. If an investigation proves the allegation true, the business will more than likely be put on a debarment list and possibly be required to post a sign in their windows stating something like off limits to military personnel and family. That will hurt their business. This usually brings wakes up the rest of the community to acting like responsible adults. It has the potential of terminating any government contracts they may have.
It worked in small town near here. A convenience stored showed contempt for servicemen, got debarred, their business dropped dramatically. They became very nice people.

Just ignore them. Chances the protesters are the loud minority.
I've lived in Italy, where they have protested against the American military presence, but when the American spends their money in one of the local stores, their hands are out and they don't protest that.
You will find "haters" everywhere, even on U.S. soil. But do remind your husband that, except for the loud minority, that many Americans love and support him and his unit and all the guys & gals serving in the U.S. Military.
And I'm with you, I too HATE the fact that those protesting can do so because of the freedom the military has won (through sacrifices) for them.
Please note that Hawaiians serve in the U.S. military as well!

Like someone said, there are sad freaks everywhere that need to do something, however ridiculous, to make them feel worthwhile. Hawaii would be in trouble without the US government. Welfare pays better than work in Hawaii. And many of them take advantage of it.
OneMadGurl, I wish the government would withdrawal our US troops from Japan and let the rest of Asia have their way with you.

It was one once, but now it is a state. There are more non-natives, than natives on the Island now. The only way it would gain its independence again is if the US government fell. Then it would just be occupied by another foreign government in short order.

For One Mad Gurl:
Perhaps, if your Grandfather, and his comrades had stayed in Japan eating his boiled hairy crab, instead of invading China, Korea (Ancestral Homeland of the Japanese) Philippines, Burma, Indo-China, and many Pacific Islands between 1935 and 1945, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and using the women as sex-slaves and torturing the Prisoners Of War in building the Burma railway and working in Japanese coal mines, etc .. etc.. there would be no need for the Americans to have bases in Japan.
You reap what you sow.
You have a problem, take it up with your ancestors otherwise zip it.

there are some Native Hawaiians that believe that yes.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But look at the poverty levels and obesity levels of the Native Population there. With or without US government presence, those issues would still be a major part of their lives.
even if we left tomorrow, the tourist industry would keep the islands economically viable. They don't need us there.

We are all really products of our mondern society. The same protesters probably arrived in their SUVs wearing Tommy Halfinger shirts. I think they have taken their demands to the point of being reverse racism.
I think all people deserve equal treatment. But how can we do that and still segregate people by their skin color or ancestry?
