Hopefully you reside in the USA. If you are in the UK, and you require a shotgun, you face a form filling exercise, a visit from plod, a Home Office/police check into your criminal past, you will need a secure gun cabinet (built to Home Office standards), securely attached to your house. Then another visit from plod to check your security arrangements and possibly your ammunition storage (depends how keen your FO is). Any history of mental illness or arguments with neighbours, or anything else that may have attracted plod's attention, and you are in for a battle! This will take from 3 weeks to 3 months from start to finish. And when/if you finally get there, it is called a Shotgun Certificate. Rifles and pistols are even more fun than the above!
The odd thing is that criminals seem to avoid all this and buy them on the streets!

You did not mention where you live. But, If your state is like Minnesota. You need to go to your County Sheriff's office or local Police Department and get a, "Permit to acquire a firearm." It can take as much as 30 days to get it. During which time a criminal background check on you will be performed. In Minnesota you must show this to the firearms dealer and they must call in your information and the weapons information to the State. Expect to be "delayed" for up to a week, while they do another background check.

Without knowing where you live, that's pretty difficult to answer. Here in Wyoming, you do not need a license to own a gun. Some States are quite restrictive, making it almost impossible to own a gun.

You need a FOID card {Firearms Owner IDentification}. Fill out an application and send it in to the state police and they send you the card in the mail.
