Wont make any difference how you got schizophrenia. Once you've got it you've got it for life.

There is no such thing as drug-induced schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is an organic brain illness - either one has the gene for it or one does not. Just like any other health problem or illness.

Drugs can make the symptoms of schizophrenia worse, but when the person stops using drugs the "worseness" wears off and the schizophrenia remains.

That being said, people who abuse drugs can develop symptoms that appear similar to schizophrenia or even a psychotic bipolar disorder (hearing voices, having hallucinations and paranoia). Typically PCP and cocaine are the worst culprits at causing temporary schizophrenic-like symptoms.

If the person has not taken drugs in years, and they are having symptoms of some kind, it may not be schizophrenia. It could be, but it's also possible they have brain damage, depending on what kind of drugs they used. The clinical presentations of schizophrenia and brain damage are quite different.

They should go to a psychiatrist for an evaluation.

Once a schizophrenic, always a schizophrenic... this is why psychiatrists are very careful about labeling someone as such. Symptoms may wax and wane depending on response to treatment. Psychotic symptoms does not always mean that someone is schizophrenic but being diagnosed as such, symptoms can only become less severe but not exactly treated.

There's no such thing as drug induced schizophrenia, although some people might have psychosis because of drug use; but not true schizophrenia.

Whether it resolves or not depends on how severe the brain damage is.

I saw someone become schizophrenic from abuse of dope, at first it was hard to understand what was happening, then we found out.. Teenage schizophrenia...

It's been about 10 years now and he's on medication and is married has kids and holds a job, but he must take his meds.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge, it is not reversible.
