Local or general?
If you will be awake for your root canal, you can eat beforehand.
If you will not be awake, do NOT eat after 8pm.

I've never heard of this precaution and I've had several root canals and a few of my teeth extracted. Of course, I should point out that I was not put under general anasthesia, which might have been the reason for that precaution. I was fully aware of all the procedures being done on my teeth.

I have had several successful root canals and not once have i ever been told not to eat. In fact once I was actually told by a dentist that not eating can alter the effectiveness of the anesthesia given, making it less effective and wear off faster. I highly recommend eating beforehand.

If you are getting a mild sedative, such as "gas" it is better not to eat, in case you have a reaction and vomit. If you are getting a local, go ahead, unless you have a tendency to get an upset stomach after such procedures.

They are just worried about vomit going into your lungs. If you are awake that won t happen.
I had an impacted wisdom tooth out with local anesthetic because I had forgotten and eaten. It was either that or reschedule.

I have had a route canal, and I was not told i could not eat. Maybe the gas works better if you don't...if it does..don't eat!
Seriously...that's BS

That's BS unless you don't brush your teeth before you go. Even if you don't, the dentists will take care of that.
