Its a very good idea to get a rental car in LA because you can see the sights really easerly and most importantly quicker.
Nearly everyone in the US drives a car and thats because its made for cars and its so big.
Its also safer to travel in a car.

Do you absolutely need to get a rental car? Maybe. It depends on where you're staying and where you're going. It's not a bad idea. You'll certainly have more freedom if you do get a car. If you're staying downtown, you'll also end up paying 20+ bucks a day to park at your hotel. Yes, really.

Sure, you absolutely can get around by other means. Los Angeles really does have good enough public transit that depending on where you want to go, you can almost certainly get there pretty easily, if not necessarily quickly. Even to Disneyland, though that's in a different county.

Check the link to see how it will work out for you. It takes 4 or 5 different counties' transit agencies into account. If it doesn't work out for you? Then get a car.

Even LA has a good Buses service (Metro.com) it is better to rent a car because you can go anywhere at anytime you want. This city is huge and my opinion is get a car. The only bad thing is the traffic, but if you try to avoid rush hours you will be ok. Trust me the traffic on freeways sucks in here!
Good Luck
