Advantage is NOT 'formerly Frontline'! These are different products, with different chemicals, made by different companies!
You will find that veterinary products are more expensive - because they tend to actually work. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work.
You can get veterinary stuff online for cheaper, just be aware that it's dodgy, you don't always get the genuine product.

Frontline (from the vet) for the Dog to kill the fleas that jump on and hitch a ride, and very important also get Indorex or similar room spray to stop the vastly greater numbers of them hiding from ever breeding again. You spray that around the beds and carpets etc, leave it for half an hour, then air the room for ah hour and it's safe. Maybe treat dog with frontline and spray the room again in 6 weeks and all those flease should be gone for a long long time. Perhaps you know someone else who might like the Hartz and could swap it for something?

I use Sentinel. It is a 5 in 1 combination medicine. It prevents fleas, heartworm, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It is a once-a-month tablet that my dog doesn't seem to mind taking. I get it from my vet and I pay $125 for a year supply (12 tablets). The price does vary depending on your pets size. My dog weighs about 45 pounds. My dog has been using it for about 6 months and I have been very happy with the results. I like the fact that it is a tablet instead of a liquid that I have to put on her because she always got so greasy. Plus, the fact that it takes care of everything in one tablet makes like much easier. However, make sure your dog is tested for heartworms before starting any heartworm medication.

Advantage Multi: About sixty or more bucks for a supply, but it also includes heartworm prevention so it is cost effective and I like the way it applies and soaks right in without a greasy feel. Works well.

BioSpot: Over the counter at PetSmart (probably PetCo, too), costs less than Vet product and yet I've found it to be more effective than regular Advantage or Regular Frontline and cheaper.
Also, no noted side effects.

CapStar from our vet. The price depends on the weight of the dog, and ours is around 40-45 lbs. We pay around $40 and the pills are given as needed. They maybe last us a couple months, but it should be better now that summer is over.

I have used this supplement for years and not one flea yet. Ever. And I live in Florida so that's saying a lot!! And it's a lot cheaper than the chemicals, so that's a bonus.

Buy from here, found them to be the cheapest:

I've been using Advantix, but I'll try to rotate every year between that and Frontline Plus.
