Most of the immigrants I know HAVE to learn English, its a matter of survival, so how come there are certain people who refuse to do so? Are they considered developmentally delayed with the brain the size of a "bean"?

Reading some of the answers people are using excuses like, it's difficult, they don't get exposure, etc. Sorry but that's rubbish. Look at Europe, most people can speak two or three languages. Is Mexico that much worse off than Poland? Lots of Poles come to the UK speaking almost perfect English or pick it up very quickly, that includes there Children. My sister used to have Friends who were Spanish and living in the UK. They weren't struggling in an English school, as well as completing Spanish education classes at home, and had very good English skills, they all had leaned English.

The same goes for English children in Spain, they go to Spanish speaking schools and are almost bilingual with in a year.

Now with all the Europeans be able to do this Asians (middle eastern, Pakistan, India, etc) don't always seem to have the same ability or want to integrate into the local communities. It's these ghettos that they create that are the main cause of problems. This is probably the same reason why Mexican don't often lean English.

Daniel F - sorry but "speakee spainsh" and "no speak English" is not enough English to get along.

Interesting. I met an educator who worked with hispanics who seemed to do well early in the education experience, but fell behind because their minds were tied to spanish in an english speaking world. The older they got, even while learning english, the farther behind they got. Her conclusion was that spanish at home kept their mental processes spanish.

I disagree. Language is not a mental process, other than to communicate. I think spanish or english or french or russian are just fine for developing good thinking processes. The need to translate everything every moment, that is what put them behind.

Any immigrant choosing to not become fluent and speak the language in the home is primed for frustration and failure.

I would not expect to live in any other country and earn my living without becoming fluent in the local language. But, I'm the guy who thinks ahead. Few immigrants are that guy.

In the first place, I don't think that anyone has a problem with immigrants in this country. What the people of the United States of America have a problem with is the illegal aliens that have swarmed to this country! They are like a plague! They don't want to learn English. They don't want to learn our ways. What they want is to make this country like the sh#t-hole they came from! Send everyone of them back to where ever! I don't care! As long as it's out of this country!

I grew up in an ALL hispanic/mexican city. English like any other language is just harder for a grown up to learn. My mom came here illegally, picked up a bit of English from Dad and alot from her jobs but she never really spoke it. Now, that doesnt mean she refuses to speak it, she undestands it fully but cant get the words out so if you speak to her in English, she'll respond in Spanish. My older sisters from her 1st marriage in Mexico came here in their teens so even though they are college grads and have had professional jobs for many years...their English is still very broken as opposed to me being born in the US and being taught both English/japanese/Spanish/French which I can speak without a problem.

I don't understand why an immigrant would not want to learn the language of his new country. I think with many it is arrogance or lack of ambition. If I could change the rules it would be required to receive a visa. For the aliens already here it would be required to renew their visa or to apply for citizenship.

I feel that, if they want to be in this country, they need to speak ENGLISH. If they refuse, they need to go home. I really get frustrated when I call the bank, the phone company, etc. and the recording states " para espanol marque el dos". We speak ENGLISH in this country. And the citizenship test?? I'm sure you need to read and write English for it!!

If it's "too hard" to learn English, stay out of our country. If you can't talk to us, why do you want to live here??

If I moved to another country, I would learn their language, not expect them to learn mine to communicate with me.

Even though English is not the "official" language, it is the COMMON language. If you cannot speak English, you are unable to communicate with the VAST majority of Americans.
And that is NOT assimilation. Especially by those that refuse to learn our language.

If someone has been here 3 years, 5 years, 10 years...and still can't speak English...they have NOT assimilated, and these are the people we are complaining about, not those that got here yesterday.

P.S. Americans don't care if illegal aliens "assimilate", we only want them out of our country.

unfortunately, it not simply a matter of they have to...
its tht they don't have to. I come from San Diego, and it is rather easy to conduct business in Spanish or English. Unfortunately, there are immigrants who are legal, and you cant force anything on them. They simply know how to do business.

note that you didn't say illegal immigrant. and they would learn english, but where are they going to learn it???? at an adult school? where they ask for personal information????

in fact, many contractors are realizing that they need someone who can speak spanish. and why not?? if it helps your company why not?? please remember that just because a company is run by spanish-speaking people does NOT mean they are illegal.

I think they are lazy and should go back to their country. When Americans travel to another country we usually try to learn some of the language of that country or we will not get by very well. Here in American everything is just handed to those and they don't feel the necessity to learn the language.

Imagine that the situation was turned around, you speak only English and you must learn Spanish to live in America; then you will know how Mexicans feel when they immigrate to America. It's not that they refuse to learn English, it is very hard, the gramma is different, the sentence construction is different, it is just very different from Spanish. If you think someone who cannot learn English has the brain the size of a pea, then those who cannot learn Spanish must also have brains the size of a pea.
