Caffeine does reduce the threshold for convulsions. Simply put, if a client is receiving ECT Tx and this client does not have a long enough or strong enough convulsion, then the anesthesiologist can give the client a caffeine injection that will help the client have a stronger and longer convulsion. If the convulsion is not strong enough or long enough then ECT Tx is pointless and will not be effective for the client's treatment.
