There are so many.
Taekwondo is one of the most popular martial arts around (from Korea) famous for its long range kicks.
Akido is good for the non-agressive.
I would probably recommend Jujitsu, because you have judo throws, hard blocks, soft blocks, punches, kicks, locks, the whole works and jerks. So it is probably one of the best traditional styles around.
As for Chinese kungfu, most Chinese feel that traditional kungfu is not very good, and they either do Taekwondo or one of the new styles.
Some people are developing their own styles based on the best from many martial arts, and you may want to try one of these schools.
However, the best martial art of all is really boxing. Most boxers have no trouble taking out black belts. The reason is that is focuses on a small number of techniques which are useful in a real world. Also the exercise program for boxing is much harder than other martial arts. Also, when you defend yourself you can hum the tune from Rocky, which really annoys the Karate people because they only have the choice of traditional Japanese music or bubble gum pop.

I would not concern myself with the style so much as the instructor and school. Look for one that has a good reputation for producing a good student that is knowledgeable, skilled, and can defend themselves. That will require some time and patient investigation on your part before you decide where and what to enroll in. Muai Thai would be good or a good Japanese/Okinawan type of karate or Brazilian Ju-jitsu. Some of those may not be available where you live so shop and pick from the best that are. As for impressing or challenging them only your hard work, abilities, and skills will probably do that and since they have the edge with respect to experience I would not consider that for a long time.
You yourself say you are lazy and that you are not really interested so going down that road is setting yourself up for failure in some ways. If you are not really wanting to do it then your motivation may not carry your through to do the hard work, training, and make the sacrifices that it will require. Even if you do there is still no quarentee that they will respect you afterwards. The other alternative is to ignore it and forget about it and move on. You can't lose any battles if you don't fight the war and by going down that road of trying to master some art and impress them when you are really not interested tells me that may be the better course of action for you. You can't help the fact that they are so into themsleves and so shalow and into martial arts that they make fun of you. If they were my students I would be kicking their butts for it in the studio in the next little sparring or randori session-everyone martial artist or non martial artist deserves to be treated with respect until they show that they are not worthy of it!

Karate means empty hand.so any form of self defence with no weapons can be constued as karate.its just that what you would know as karate has been evolved over hundreds of years and proved in many wars.the best way to sort your family is to cook them a nice meal, add the little bit that makes them get the aztec twostep and when they are sitting contemplating their immediate future run into the bathroom and thrash them with the belts they tease you with.! this shows mentall skill and tell them you are a black belt in a higher art (cooking) ..good luck..
and all the twaddle about cravmagna whatever that is-sounds like a volcanic eruption-be humble my friend be humble.

Learning self defense with the idea you learn to fight is putting the horse before the cart and sadly what most people are selling is fighting not self defense which makes you aware of the emotional legal and social repurcussions that you can incur due to fighting .'
Fighting and self defense are 2 different things and fighting is what is usually promoted by krav maga mma and other reality based bullshit.
More than one martial artist and reality based jerk off has ended up in prison or sued into the poor house because his only defense was "the other guy started it"

Don't go looking for the ultimate style. There is no such thing. Just go looking for a good school, with a competent instructor. If you start now, you'll be on your way. But your goal shouldn't be to surpass your brothers, or anybody else (remember, they've got a length of advance on you). Your goal should be to learn, and to surpass yourself.

Um, why don't you just learn at the school your family learns at? If not the same school because of location, why not the same style? They should be able to help you find a good program. If not, then they really don't know what they heck they're talking about.

Karate is hard work. Takes a long time to learn the techniques. Doesn't sound like you are ready for that. Ask your "black belt" relatives if their Sensei knows they are bragging and bullying.
