God is just as close as He ever is. Note Isaiah 43:2:
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
He may allow us to go through suffering, but we never have to face it alone.

From what I think I've observed, God takes away the emotions that cause the suffering, not external factors that are causing the suffering. But I guess there have been other ways, too. Personally, I would prefer both the external factors that cause the suffering to be taken away as well as the harmful emotions.

That is the defintion of "God". That divine higher power that is supposed to make the suffering worthwhile/tolerable. Its the belief system that either something will "make it worth while" or that it will help you out if it. It doesn't have to be Jesus's father or the ground we walk on. That is the common name we give to the higher power that you pray to no matter what the religion. To a Satanist, the Devil is their God.

right in the midst of it with me. God never promised no suffering, but He promised His presence, and grace to go through them

Walking right beside me thru good times and bad. One of Jesus's promises was that He would never leave us. If I cry, I can feel His tears, if Iam laughing I can hear His laughter. He is right beside me and goes thru everything I go thru

first, He is showing me the error of my ways, so that I see the part I played in it ( rather than blaming others)
secondly, He is waiting for me on the mountain of rejoicing after I have cried in the valley
thirdly, He takes my ashes of despair and gives me the beauty of the life that is mine

Obviously, nowhere nearby, or the suffering wouldn't be nearly as painful.
