I am working on getting my degree in criminal justice but I have a felony on my record from 6 years ago for drug use. Because I have been in no trouble since I am getting it expunged from my record. Will this prevent me from getting certain jobs pertaining to this degree. Is it even worth it to go to all the schooling for the degree? Do you think I should major in something else? I hate to go through all the schooling and not be able to use a degree because of something I did stupid when I was younger that will soon be expunged.Help me out please. Thanks

Any felony charge, expunged or not, will be an automatic reason that disqualifies for any and all certified law enforcement jobs. A conviction on a felony, even as a juvenile, will never allow you in any type of police or corrections work.

Expunged records can not usually be found by the public... but the can always be found by the police. And that will get you shown the exit door.

Sorry... you are 100% out of luck.

B.A. won't cut you any slack with or without life history thingy.
Work toward a Masters Degree will open a few doors and
still others if there is a PhD inside reader. Focus on a field of study early, like corrections, and show some promise.
The last start salary I saw for C/O in California was 45K.

Too few women enter that area of Criminal Justice which is another joker you can put into your hand. Its better if you walk behind the walls in administrative business pantsuit than the uniform of hacks or screws. Trust me on that concept.

But, first, you've got to step up.
Enjoy.

Not necessarily. It all depends on what you are wanting to do with the degree and the laws in your state.
With a criminal justice degree you can do almost anything. If it wasn't being expunged then of course it would be alot harder, but since it is unless you are going for certain governmental jobs or jobs where you could be "deemed" a danger (with a drug charge unlikely) then I wouldn't worry about it.

i am actually in college right now for my criminal justice degree and in my juveniles of america class we had discussed felonys among juveniles and adults. If i remember right, even though your felony has been expunged, your employers can still look at your record and see that its there, so this leaves the decision of whether or not to hire up to the employer, there can be alot of discretion here, i think you should go for it, you cant go wrong with having any degree from college. I have a tuition of about $14,000 a year for a bachelors in criminal justice. goodluck.

Just as a personal suggestion, and especially in your case, I wouldn't go for a Major in Criminal Justice. One, if something happens and it's either difficult or impossible to get a job in LE, then you probably have some sort of law firm job to fall back on. Second, if you do make it on the force and your injured to the point where you can't work anymore, what do you fall back on? Major in another field that's revalent to CJ, such as Psychology, Politics, etc., and then minor in CJ. That way, you have a plan B, since most police agencies could care less if you had a degree in Fashion.

I GATHER THAT YOUR FELONY WAS AS A JUVENILE. AND THUS THE RECORD IS SEALED OR CLOSED. (EXCEPT TO POLICE)
I WOULD FILL OUT MY PAPERWORK AND MENTION IT ONLY IF THE FORM ASKS AND PUT DOWN "AS A JUV."
BY THE TIME YOU GRADUATE IT WILL HAVE BEEN 10 YEARS.
THE DEPARTMENTS CANNOT REFUSE YOUR APPLICATION JUST BECAUSE YOU DID A STUPID ACT AS A JUVENILE.
YOUR ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF WHAT YOU DID, IT BEING EXPUNGED, WILL GIVE YOU AN OPENNESS TOWARDS THE DEPARTMENT, IT WILL ALSO PUT YOUR MIND AT EASE THAT YOU ARE NOT HIDING ANY GHOSTS IN THE CLOSET.
I SAY THIS BECAUSE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MENTION IT. BUT WITH MOST PERSONNEL SELECTION BOARDS I SAT ON, I KNEW THAT GUY BECAUSE I ARRESTED HIM 10-15 YEARS AGO. SO YOU NEVER KNOW?
THE ONE WHO ARRESTED YOU 10 YEARS AGO, MAY BE A LT / CAPT AND SIT ON YOUR BOARD.
S/HE MY OR MAY NOT REMEMBER YOU? BUT DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THAT CHANCE?
THE FIRST THING THE DEPARTMENT WANTS IS OPENNESS AND TRUTHFULNESS. MORE THEN LIKELY THEY WILL SAY YOU DID NOT NEED TO PUT THIS DOWN? AND YOU CAN SAY YES I KNOW BUT I HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE. PLUS IT WAS THE BEST LESSON I LEARNED. GOOD LUCK

you could always work with children, such as troubled youth. There is the dept of probation or parole. If you are interested (I was looking at your finance record), you could start your own security or investigation firm. You could always transfer your college credits and go for your law degree, or become a judge. There are several things you can do. I hope you find the right one, as I know how hard it is to figure out what to do with your degree. I have a Bus. Admin degree and I hate people :(.....good luck.
