Now before you answer consider these details.
1. They gave me a paper citation (not the actual ticket), and told me a ticket would come in the mail.
2. I made the mistake of telling the police officer that my parents already knew I smoked, which may have inspired him to teach me a lesson by making sure I get the ticket.

but....
3. They made me call my parents and they had to leave a voice mail saying they knew about the citation (basically, the cop made me tell my parents), so maybe he thought that was enough punishment.
and
4. I've heard of other people who have gotten citations and who's tickets never came.

By the way, I live in Minnesota and was pulled over in Champlin where the cops are usually jerks. Please no answers lecturing me on not smoking. I just want to know if I should be expecting the ticket or if the officer was just trying to scare me.

I'm pretty sure they are required to send off your ticket to your address within 20 days of the citation.

I'm not from Minnesota. I don't know the law there. Hell, I don't know the law HERE about underage smoking.

Still, I just can't figure out why a cop would NOT write a ticket to you when you were right there, but WOULD write a ticket later and mail it to you. Yeah, yeah, I read the part about your parents. If he was worried about it, he could have detained you until your parents showed up to pick you up. So that's not it.

And, as much as I've HEARD about jerk cops, I've only run into about 3 of them in my entire life. So, instead of him being a jerk, he probably only acted that way to scare some thought into you and was probably doing you a favor, the jerk!

Why lecture you on smoking? You're a big boy that thinks it's cool and that those warnings are just for wimps.

So I'm not going to lecture you. I'm up at 5 AM in the morning because I'd dealing with the ever increasing pain from Pancreatic Cancer. But that won't happen to you cause you're young and invincible. You have the whole rest of your life to live, I have about 6 months or so. But don't worry about that. Couldn't possibly happen to you, it happens to 'other' people.

But just in case your all powerful super shield fails one day and you end up trying to eat something, ANYTHING, that might taste good because the drugs have killed your sense of taste and you look like one of those Ethiopian kids that are starving, remember this answer.

Or don't remember the answer. I'll be long, long gone by then.

WELL I THOUGHT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT OPEN AIR LAWS AND SMOKING IN A PUBLIC PLACE ILLEGALLY?

AS A JUVENILE WE ARE REQUIRED TO NOTIFY YOUR PARENTS.
HENCE THE TICKET AND THE PHONE CALL FROM YOUR PARENTS ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THEY WERE APPRAISED BY YOU OF THE SITUATION.
THAT SHOULD HANDLE THAT TICKET. FUTURE VIOLATIONS.
SOME ONE IS FURNISHING A MINOR CIGARETTES?
THIS IS A VIOLATION OF THE LAW.
IF YOU SMOKE AT HOME, YOU ARE OK. IN PARENTS HOUSE. (BACK OR FRONT YARD, ON THEIR PROPERTY)
ANYPLACE ELSE IT IS A CRIME? YOU ARE THEN A MINOR IN PUBLIC.
