I always hear the phrase: "Do what you love." Well, I love history and I love studying warfare. How exactly can I turn this into a career?

Study history in college and earn advanced degrees.

I love history, too; I switched my major from engineering to history as an undergraduate. Now I am a graduate student in history, two semesters from finishing my MA.

I want to go back to teaching high school, but most of my class mates are going onto a doctoral program.

If you want to be a military historian, I would suggest that you work towards a Ph.D in history.

As the previous two have stated, go onto university and do history as your major, with possibly politics as a minor plus one or two languages (help with translating foreign documents). As you are interested in military history I would also go onto doing a Masters and a PhD. You did not say what military history you are interested in. US, British, Australian, New Zealand or that of another country. A person can spend an entire life researching the military history of one country although they need some general knowledge of the "enemy's" history and that of their allies.

to make it a career, if you have writing skills, write and send your sample write ups to publishers and newspapers... if you land a column, then you are on the roll for a career in history... good luck...
