I would have done the same thing.
It honestly doesn't matter, in the grand scheme of the universe if you told a lonely lady that her dog is cute. She went away feeling good, and it obviously doesn't matter to her, so, what's the harm.

hey i know that sometimes it's hard to find the good in things, but dogs...there's a trick (if you're a softy for them) No matter what breed age or smell when I look into any dog's eyes I melt.
Their eyes are just soo big and always seem to look like they're pleading with you and so you have to give in.
So I do think you did the right thing (like saying all babies are cute kinda deal) but personally in this case i think all dogs are cute, lovable, etc. (once i was stopped at a red light and the lady in the next car over opened her window and started talking to me bout how cute my dog was...it did make me feel good though)

Where do you live that a dog is allowed in the grocery store? Other than a seeing eye dog or service dog, no others are allowed into any business that serves food due to health department regulations.
Yes, it is only right and proper to compliment the womans' dog. You would tell someone with a homely baby that the baby was cute, wouldn't you? Similar event...

I met a dog at the shelter where I volunteer and thought he was soooo ugly I could hardly look at him! He was a mix between a pitbull and a lab and had a face only a mother could love. Or so I thought...
Once I'd spent some time with him I realised he was the most gorgeous dog ever due to his sweet and funny nature.
The lady you met probably knows her dog won't win any competitions and that you didn't mean it when you said it was a beauty. She probably is just a real "doggy person" who wanted to share a moment. Get past the looks thing, like I learned to! It's a good job not all people care what their dogs look like or we'd be even more overrun with homeless pooches.

I would have done the same thing, I am an "ugly/beautiful" dog lover (the uglier, the more I think they are beautiful), (I love the way Chinese Crested dogs look)!!!! You probably made that lady's day!! She probably is lonely and needed someone to talk to!!!! There really is no reason to be rude and mean!!

My friend and I go visit her grandmother once in a while. Her grandmother is a very nice lady, but her house stinks of cat urine. Not just cat urine. She chain smokes. Her white hair, which she gets done weekly, is yellow from nicotine all around her face. There is a yellow ring on the ceiling above her chair. I sat in cat poo once... on the d@mn couch. She wears clothes that went out of style in 1412. I always tell her that she looks lovely, her place has never looked better, and that her hairdresser should get some sort of an award. They're called white lies. If it spares someone's feelings... and it's very trivial, I say lie away.

I think pretty much every dog is cute. And as a dog person, I always love to meet other people's dogs. So I don't think it is too weird. Especially since you brought your dog into the store with you. But yes, if I ever thought a dog wasn't very cute, I would still tell their owner it was adorable, but this hasn't happened to me yet...

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Yes I would have done the same thing she thinks her dog is cute and that's all that matters. I think mine are beautiful but some think they are scary looking (one of them) but do I care...... NO!
You did the right thing in being nice, maybe she need reassured! Probably made her feel good!

ohhhhhhhh ..... of course I'd be nice. I'm sure she thinks her dog is beautiful, too. And in her eyes, it is, and SHE is the one who has to look at it all the time!
Just give a compliment and a smile and go home and secretly gloat that YOURS is the most beautiful doggie of them ALL!
Added: To Dog Addict ... Loved your answer!!! You're right, it's more about making someone's day. I figure it's all Kharma, and what goes around comes around. Someday someone will tell me a little white lie, and it will be exactly what I need to hear! Maybe not the strict truth, but no matter!

I would try to find something positive about the dog so that I wouldn't have to lie nor be mean to this lady. Maybe the words "sweet" or " precious" could be used. That way , you are complimenting her without lying :-)
