I don't know the actual reasoning, but there's no real point for them to watch you while you change. They can run out and see another patient, check on lab results, or get a cup of coffee while you are changing. Better use of time...

Rarely does a doctor strip you completely naked. They at least give you a sheet, drape, or gown to wear. I imagine that most people would be very uncomfortable to stand there buck naked in front of a stranger, even if he or she is a doctor.

This is to the respondent who posted higher. Any doctor can perform a gynecologic exam and in actuality you will find gynecologists who do the exam as well as family practice physicians, hematologists/oncologists, surgeons or really any physician performing a general physical or has need to check those parts of the body.

The doctor only needs to see you in the "position" to examine what he/she is there to examine. They have enough sense to know that most patients will NOT be comfortable with somone WATCHING them undress. It's a courtesy for the patient. Think about it. Even in a gynocological exam you get to have a sheet over you. If the doctor's there actually watching you undress; you have no privacy at all.

Even though they are going to see you naked they leave so that you are comfortable. It would be worse to change while they stood there and watched. They are respecting your privacy.

I think its the act of getting naked that they want to avoid. Somehow it has more of a sexual connotation. While your naked body can be seen in just a clinical manner.

Watching someone take their clothes off could conceivably be more embarassing because it could have sexual connotations. Therefore, the doctor steps out to allow privacy, and the patient is free to drape or not drape, depending on comfort level.

They might see parts of your body, but they don't see your whole body naked at the same time. It's different, because when they see your body and just uncover part of it to examine it, it's very clinical.

So there aren't any misunderstandings in the event that someone walks right in, is what I'm guessing. I know these people here are like what the heck, but you do have a point.
